What is Hijab ( حجاب)? Hijab is tradtionally worn by Muslim women in the presence of male excluded in their family which is called mahram. It is the Islamic way of "veiling", hijab means "cover" as a symbol of modesty to women.

One of the questions I have been asked by many is that why do Muslim women need to wear hijab? Hijab is part of the modesty within the connection between people with opposite sex. A verse quoted that “This is more appropriate so that they may be known [as Muslim women] and thus not be harassed [or molested].” (Verse 59 of chapter 33). Men are slaves of lust and desire whether they admit it or not, hijab protects women from such men. Hijab is a symbol that a woman is sanctified to only one man and is not allowed to others.

Wearing of hijab is stated in the hadith (traditional reports) and in the Holy Qur'an. It is stated, "And tell the believing women to lower their gaze and be modest, and to display of their adornment only that which is apparent, and to draw their veils over their bosoms..." (24:31) ". So then, I can say is that hijab is wajib, it is mandatory and instructed by Islam, it is a way of avoiding fitnah. By religious women, a woman's beauty itself is viewed as sinful.

Hijabi people like me knows the struggle of being tempted to take off our hijab. I will admit it that yes, there are lots of times that I am tempted to take of my hijab (Astaghfirullah). "You look more beautiful without your hijab on." "It's too hot, just take it off", hearing those words sometimes make me want to just remove my hijab, thinking that without hijab, I have more freedom and can do more things without thinking of being modest, but no, I was wrong, with hijab I feel protected and secured.

Believe me, the day I started wearing hijab, my life changed, I became a better Muslim and I was able to give discipline to myself. I tell you, my sisters, wear hijab and In Sha Allah, Allah will grant you a reward. Also, please do remember, Hijab is faith, not fashion statement. Show that you wear hijab because you are a Muslim and that you belong to Islam not because of fashion or because it looks good on you. Wear hijab with modesty and carry your imaan (faith).
Yours trully,
Hijabi Hassana
